Femina Miss India : Info

Miss India is a national beauty pageant in India that selects representatives to compete at international pageants like Miss World, Miss International and Miss United Continents. The Miss India pageant is organised by Femina, a women's magazine published by Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. From 1964 to 1975 the winner of Miss India was sent to Miss Universe and a runner up was sent to Miss Asia Pacific. Later in 1976, Miss India got the franchise of Miss World and three winners were chosen to represent India at Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific.

In 1994, India witnessed a historic win at the International pageants, where Sushmita Sen, who was the winner of Miss India 1994, won the title of Miss Universe 1994 and Aishwarya Rai, who was the first Runner-up at Miss India 1994, won the title of Miss World 1994. After the remarkable win, the custom of crowning a single winner was discontinued and the organization decided that all the top three winners will be designated as winners with equal visibility and prizes.

Earlier, the three winners of Miss India were sent to Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss Asia Pacific International pageants, respectively. And in 2000, three of the Miss India winners won their respective international pageants — Lara Dutta (Miss Universe), Priyanka Chopra (Miss World) and Diya Mirza (Miss Asia Pacific). However in 2002, Miss India started sending the second Runner-upto Miss Earth and later in 2010, the organization abandoned the Miss Universe franchise, and choosing the third winner to represent India in Miss International pageant. However, in 2013, Miss Universe Organisation endowed back the franchise to Miss India, and a separate pageant, Miss Diva 2013 was conducted to send a representative to Miss Universe.
