On March 7, 2017 the organizers of the Miss Ghana beauty pageant expressed their intentions to host the Miss World in the coming years. Inna Mariam Patty, Chief Executive Officer of Exclusive Events, made the announcement.

As Ghana marks its 60th Independence anniversary, the organizers of Ghana’s glamorous pageant also informed President Akufo-Addo about plans put in place to make this year’s pageantry a memorable one.

Patty told the president that how winners have undertaken projects that contribute to national development. She also mentioned the Don Bosco Street Child Project as one of the flagship projects. “We acquired a 10-acre land and built a hostel, where a lot of street children and those who cannot afford to pay their fees are given technical, vocational education and skills in catering. In the last 10 years, we have churned out a lot of youth with skills who can also contribute their quota to society,” she said.

She also revealed that the pageant organizers have partnered with the Forestry Commission to carry out various tree planting exercises across the country. Continuing with the same, she said that “We are hopeful that the proposal of having national support for the hosting the world event (Miss World pageant) will be given a favourable consideration. Countries lobby to host this prestigious event annually, as it generates millions of dollars in revenue and investment for the successful country. We are hopeful that Ghana, in the next 2 to 3 years, will be ready to host such an event.”

The President Akufo-Addo was overwhelmed and thanked the delegation for the courtesy of their visit, and described the Miss Ghana beauty pageant as “One of those events that promote and sell a country. It is something that should be of concern to all of us; that is one of the ways we can promote and sell Ghana as a place one can visit and a country one invests his or her money.”

The President Akufo-Addo also commended the past award winners for their commitment to the Miss Ghana project and also urged organisers to liaise with the Minister for Tourism and said that he is all for it and thinks that collectively they can find a way of getting public support for this (Miss Ghana), as it falls in line with the larger project of promoting Ghana.

A Miss ‘Ghana@60’ beauty pageant is expected to be organized in August this year, as part of the year-long celebration of the 60th Independence anniversary celebration.

Ghana made its debut at the Miss World in the year 1959 with Star Nyaniba Annan as their first ever representative. However, she couldn’t bring any placement to the country. Since then, Ghana has only managed five placements at the Miss World so far. Ghana got its highest placement in the year 2013 when Carranzar Shooter placed second runner-up to Megan Young of Philippines. Ghana has won Beauty with a Purpose twice, first being in 2006 and second time in 2011.
