Miss Supranational 2016 Show: A No-No to Big Five

03 Dec 2016 | Angelopedia

Miss Supranational 2016, held on 2nd December 2016, honoured one of the most gorgeous, an epitome of beauty in simplicity, Miss India Srinidhi Shetty, as the winner of the 8th edition of the beauty pageant. The moment saw, on stage, delegates from all over the world cheering for the new queen. The journey had started months ago, but the last three hours of the pageant were nothing as expected...

Amidst all the hullabaloo of including the Miss Supranational in Big 5 beauty pageants and the clamour associated with introducing new features to the beauty pageant, some of them presented for the first time in the beauty pageant history, Miss Supranational organisers forgot to prepare well for a flawless show. Amidst gorgeous moments with beautiful contestants, the show was filled with chaos and some more chaos..

The lady host was amusingly chaotic, over the top of everything, and definitely did everything she could to kill the excitement. The event started with the opening number. One by one each delegate presented their national costumes and delighted the spectators with a dose of culture and heritage from their own lands. Miss Vietnam walked to her victory in this round. The swim wear round followed with the show slowly taking a surprisingly loutish turn, as beauties were expected to shake their bodies as their contenders came forward and posed. A synchronised group performance may have been okay, but what was to be seen on stage at that moment, with beauties in bikinis shaking their bodies, was in no way decent.

The organisers sure did call some renowned music performers to compliment the heart-whelming performances of the international delegates, walking with their lavish evening gowns and piercing our hearts with their beauty and poise. Although the performances by the music artists were superbly amazing, and as much as we would like to mention that we really did love the performances, there was too many of them, absolutely unneeded. Though, we would like to extend special thanks for including ‘what a wonderful world’ which was set perfect as beauties walked in one by one dressed wonderfully, complimenting the song.

The evening gown round was a delight and also very exciting, mostly because we knew the moment has come when for the first time 25 finalists will be announced. After the announcement of the Top 25 contestants, the stunners graced the stage for the sport-wear round, introduced for the first time ever. At first, the our reaction was...wait..what!..but as the 25 dazzlers walked in, all hip and sporty, displaying a treat of enthusiasm and optimism, the sport-wear, though not necessary to the full extent of its meaning, was a great change. The hosts did bore a little with their ‘no one is hurt’ commentary, but the announcement of the Top 10 soon filled the hall with happy cheers.

The next was yet another great music performance followed by the announcement of Top 5 Miss Supranational beauties and then the show took a very interesting turn. Everyone was excited about the Question-Answer round, happening for the first time in Miss Supranational’s eight year’s pageant history. The hosts gave a heads up saying that the questions have not been proposed by the judges but will actually be put forward by delegates to delegates. A very interesting concept and we are impressed! The Top 5 finalists asked each other questions which the latter answered. Though the concept was really creative, we were expecting some more innovation when it came to the questions. The answers were decent but not as impressive as a ‘boasted to be Big 5’ pageant’s finalists are expected to give.

What surprised the viewers more than anything were the final dresses of the contestants. The victory gowns were nothing close to impressive and there was absolutely no ‘wow!’ factor in them. The only interesting part was the simple and composed winner. The stunning Miss India, still dazzled and made her country proud. Her reply to the question asked by Miss Venezuela -  "71 delegates fighting for one reason with unity and love" - was showcased live at the final moments of the show when every delegate came to congratulate her on winning the crown.

As surprising as it may be for many, India’s Srinidhi Shetty won the Miss Supranational 2016. However, the show may have been a little too stretched out and unorganised, the fans around the globe did enjoy it to the fullest!
