Miss Universe Australia 2016 Caris Tiivel has revealed her National Costume for Miss Universe 2016 and people are not very happy about it. The Miss Universe 2016 pageant is on its road to the finale and is slated to be held on 30th January 2017 in the Philippines. At the conclusion of the finale, Pia Wurtzbach of Philippines will pass on her crown to her successor.

So, as Miss Universe Australia 2016 Caris Tiivel presented her National Costume on Thursday morning’s edition of The Today Show, she explained that her costume was designed with so many colours to represent the Great Barrier Reef and attempt to raise awareness around coral bleaching. Her costume has been designed by Australian designer Steph Audino, and looks like that it’s going to get Caris some serious backlash.

The Breakfast show host questioned Tiivel about the costume and said,  “The dress can be a bit of a talking point, sometimes in some years they haven’t been to everyone’s taste. Are you prepared for this to become a topic of conversation?”

“I think it’s stunning, and in Australia, it’s always hard to find the costumes always have a bit of a mixed reaction from the public because Australia doesn’t really have a traditional costume, so our ones are inspired by landmarks or famous people in Australia,” replied Tiivel.

According to Tiivel, the costume is stunning and represents “the Great Barrier Reef and Australia very well”. However, it seems like viewers don’t agree with it as there were some quick responses on social media against the costume. “Looks like an overblown Christmas decoration,” one viewer said on Facebook.

“This Miss Universe Australia costume looks more post-xmas cat bum extrusion/toilet roll dolly and not at all like a coral reef,” came another feedback on Twitter.

“Our Miss Universe Australia costume is inspired by the Great Barrier Reef… and it just looks like a giant mound of leftover Xmas tinsel,” another comment read.

“Really the best we can do?” one Instagram user asked.

Right after her crowning, Caris was in news for her striking resemblance with famous Victoria’s Secret Model Miranda Kerr. Caris is one strong contender for the Miss Universe 2016 title. Will her National Costume hold back her chances at the pageant? Let’s hear your opinion on the National Costume!!
