In just two days the Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 pageant will come to a conclusion. The finale is slated to be held on 23rd February 2017, and Miss Universe Malaysia 2016 Kiran Jassal will pass on her crown at the conclusion of the pageant. The theme of this year’s Miss Universe Malaysia pageant is “Hip, Urban, Relevant and Real”, and based on this, one of the 18 finalists of the Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 pageant will be crowned as the winner.
Before the finale hits in, the contestants were tested through a Preliminary Competition. The Preliminary Competition was to judge the eighteen finalists and how well are they prepared for the gala finale. The finalists walked the ramp donning evening gowns and swimsuit. Based on their performances, some of the contestants were awarded the following Special Awards –
Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation (MUMO) national director and Miss Universe Malaysia 2003 Elaine Daly said that the finalists made up the many ethnic groups in the country and included two national sportswomen — a national fencer, Laura Simon, and sprinter, Tanalaksiumy. “When I was a mentor to former Miss Universe Malaysia Carey Ng in 2013, I was not able to witness the whole process. The difference this time around is that I get to see them from the beginning until they’re transformed into individuals in a league of their own.”
Malaysia has so far not been so successful at the Miss Universe pageant, with no titles to its credit. The best placement for Malaysia was in the year 1978, when Yasmin Yusoff managed to place Top 15 at the finals.
