Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was crowned as Miss South Africa 2017 on 26th March 20117, and since then the beauty queen has been deemed as a favourite for the Miss World title. The gorgeous South African beauty is also being compared to Miss South Africa 2014 Rolene Strauss, who later went on to win the Miss World 2014 title. Recently, a pleasant evening turned into a horrifying event for Demi who was a victim of an attempted hijacking on June 7 at Jan Smuts Avenue.

Miss South Africa office confirms that Demi-Leigh was the victim of an attempted hijacking earlier this evening (Wednesday June 7) on Jan Smuts Avenue in Hyde Park Johannesburg. She was approached by three armed hijackers. She managed to exit the vehicle and a good Samaritan came to Demi's aid and drove her away from the scene. Her car and handbag was later recovered at the scene by a security company. The police are investigating further. Demi is shaken by the incident but unharmed.

According to the statement, the incident took place near the Hyde Park Corner Shopping Centre early in the evening. "The personal belongings of Miss South Africa were taken, but the suspects fled without taking her car," reports suggested.

Post her crowning, the 21 year old beauty said that she is determined to make a difference during her reign. “I vow to dedicate the next 365 days of my life to serve the people of South Africa, to be a voice to those who are afraid to, or cannot speak up and to represent the whole of our beautiful nation. I vow to listen, to be there, to help where I can and to recognise that we all want to be heard, we all want to be validated. I hear you, I see you, I am you!” said Demi during one of her interviews.
