Filipinas Queen Jamie Herrell faces racism at LA Fashion Week

15 Mar 2018 | Angelique Reyes

Miss Earth 2014 Jamie Herrell from the Philippines competed against 84 ladies from all over the globe and emerged victorious, experiencing a bolt of strong diversity and uniqueness. The title itself signifies unity among diversity and that’s exactly what the beauty queen has experienced and learned from her in the international platform of beauty and fashion.

But recently the Filipina beauty had to face a round of discrimination on the basis of racism and she had to walk out of Los Angeles Fashion Week.

She wasn’t the only one as she faced this hardship along with Six Filipina models, including singer Kiana Valenciano as well as international Filipino designers.

These ladies were invited to partake of the fashion show by the famous Lebanese/fashion designer Elie Madi. But after their arrival at The MacArthur on Monday night, March 12, things turned ugly when these models and designers were asked to leave the backstage by the staff of Art Hearts Fashion, the organizer of the event.

Apparently, the Art Hearts Fashion's president Erik Rosete didn’t want the Filipinas to take part in the show and he also used comments like, “No Filipinos on the runway.”

Though it was a misfortunate event, our beauty queen kept her head held high and had only these strong words to convey –

One man doesn’t define a whole nation. After the LA fashion week experience I have been receiving many messages about this issue on my social media accounts. Yes, racism is still an issue and what has happened shouldn’t have happened but, not all people are the same. I have met wonderful people of different race and colour in America (including Americans) and this one man will not taint my image of the good people I have met in this country. So for the women and men who want to make a career here please keep that hope and give yourself the chance to make your dreams come true. Filipinos are strong at heart and let’s continue to show that to the world. Let’s celebrate our differences and break away from the prejudice because life is just to freaking beautiful.?? Well, that’s one positive way to see it!

People are saddened over the course of happenings and several people are supporting the beauty queen and the models. Due to this situation, Jacob Meir, the owner of For the Stars Fashion House, the 'home' of the three designers on Melrose Avenue, refused to allow the designers to continue with the fashion show because he would not allow the show to go on without the Filipino models, Jamie and Kiana.
