Miss World 2009 Kaiane Lopez is ready to explore a new reign. No, this time it isn’t going to be any beauty pageant, but politics. A short Press Release was issued on the same by the Government of Gibraltar on behalf of the Chief Minister. The Press Release was the official announcement that said that at the next meeting of Parliament, the Chief Minister proposes to move the following motion...

‘THIS HOUSE APPOINTS Mrs Kaiane Lopez GMH to be Mayor of Gibraltar and Mr John Gonçalves MBE GMD to be her deputy as from Tuesday April 4,  2017.’

At present, Kaiane is the deputy mayor of Gibraltar and her role has been increasing with time. She has been actively involved with various events and acts. Kaiane won the Miss World title in the year 2009, and became the first Gibraltar woman to win the title. She was also the first Miss Gibraltar to reach the semi-finals of Miss World after receiving the title of Miss World Beach Beauty. Here victory brought in a huge celebration in the country, and then  Chief Minister of Gibraltar Peter Caruana hailed her win as a "wonderful achievement for her and for Gibraltar" and promised a "homecoming fit for a queen"

During her reign, Lopez traveled to over 40 countries. Some of these countries include: United Kingdom, Gibraltar, Japan, Brunei, Hong Kong, Canada, United States, Spain, Germany, Korea, Italy, Indonesia, South Africa, Ireland, and China. In 2014 she was appointed as the Deputy Mayor of Gibraltar.

The role of a mayor is an unpaid one with core duties of a ceremonial nature. The person chosen is appointed for a one-year period by the parliament. The current mayor Adolfo Canepa will step down after three years of service. Adolfo also served from 1976 to 1978. Kaiane is not the first female mayor of Gibraltar, but is much popular due to her victory at the Miss World pageant.
