Puteri Indonesia (meaning “Princess of Indonesia”), also known as Miss Universe Indonesia, is the beauty pageant in Indonesia, that selects and sends the winner for the Miss Universe international pageant. The Puteri Indonesia pageant was established in 1992 and is considered the oldest pageant in Indonesia.
Since 1995, Puteri Indonesia, started choosing winners for the Miss Universe, but in 1996, Mrs. Tien Suharto, who was the wife of the late second president of the Republic of Indonesia, Suharto, forced the winner to withdraw from competing at the Miss Universe pageant. However, in the year 2004, when Suharto was overthrown, Puteri Indonesia resumed the process of sending winner to Miss Universe.
In the year 2005, the first runner up of Puteri Indonesia was sent to Miss World, but it lost the franchise of the Miss World in 2006. After going through a series of hits and misses with international pageants, eventually it was finalized that the three winners will be sent to Miss Universe, Miss International, and Miss Supranational.
