Miss Russia is the annual national beauty pageant of Russia that selects representatives of Russia to two of the Big 4 international beauty pageants namely Miss Universe and Miss World. Formed in 1989, the pageant has been running since 1992. Ever since its commencement, the pageant has been held annually except in the years 1994, 2000 and 2008, when no pageant was held.
Julia Kourotchkina was the winner of Miss Russia 1992, the first edition of Miss Russia pageant. She went on to represent Russia at Miss World 1992 pageant and not only did Russia debut in Miss World that year, it also went on to win that year's edition.
Since 2007, the winner of Miss Russia is being sent to both Miss Universe and Miss World. If the winner is unable to represent for any reason, the first runner up is sent in lieu. Till date, Russia has won three major international titles - Miss World 1992, Miss Universe 2002 (the winner however was later dethroned and Panama's Justine Pasek, the first runner-up, was crowned instead) and Miss World 2008.
