Miss America : Info

Miss America Organisation is a non-profit organization that controls and oversees the local, state, and national competition framework and hosts the annual Miss America Competition and telecast. Miss America is a scholarship pageant that is held annually and is open to women from the United States between the ages of 17 and 24.

It originating started as a "bathing beauty revue" in 1921, and is now judged on competitors' talent performances and interviews in addition to their physical appearance. Miss America travels about 20,000 miles a month, changing her location every 24 to 48 hours, touring the nation and promoting her particular platform of interest.

Miss America contestants contribute tens of thousands of community service hours annually and have raised over $13 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Miss America scholarships since 2007. The Miss America pageant is a movement of empowering young women everywhere to achieve their dreams by providing quality scholarship assistance and honouring their commitment to helping others.

With every major milestone in the nation’s history, Miss America has evolved with its society, serving as a voice for women’s empowerment when it was uncommon for women to be vocal; promoting women’s education at a time when women were discouraged from joining the workforce; and serving as a champion for Civil Rights and HIV/AIDs awareness when each were deemed controversial.

In 1954, Lee Meriwether became the first Miss America to be crowned on live television with more than 27 million viewers or 39 percent of the television audience. One of the biggest highlights of the pageant was in 2015 when the Miss America 1984 Vanessa Williams made her historic return to the Miss America stage singing “Oh How the Years Go By.” Her performance concluded with a standing ovation, as Executive Chairman Sam Haskell joined Vanessa on stage and officially welcomed her back to the Miss America family.
