The Miss USA pageant is an annual national beauty pageant held in the US to select representative for the Miss Universe pageant. Traditionally, Miss USA lives in New York City during her reign. Since 1952, the Miss USA pageant has been in existence. The Miss Universe Organisation operates both Miss USA and Miss Universe pageant, as well as the Miss Teen USA.
Previously NBC used to broadcast the Miss USA pageant. However, in 2015 NBC decided to end their business relationship and stated that they will no longer air the event. Since 2015, the Miss USA pageant will be televised on Reelz.
In 1950, when Yolande Betbeze, winner of the rival Miss America pageant, refused to pose for publicity pictures while wearing a swimsuit, pageant sponsor Catalina decided to pull their sponsorship off the pageant and create their own competition. Donald Trump, the current owner of Miss USA, bought the pageant in the year 1996.
From 1963 until 2002, the pageant was aired on CBS. Since the inception of the pageant, eight titleholders have gone to win the Miss Universe title. In the mid-1960s, the organization established a rule that when a Miss USA wins the Miss Universe title, the first runner-up assumes the Miss USA title for the remaining year. The current Miss USA is Nia Sanchez of Nevada who was crowned on June 8, 2014 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She went on to represent USA at the Miss Universe 2015 pageant and was titled first runner-up.
