The dreadful demise of Miss Honduras shook the World back in 2014 as the beauty queen and her sister were brutally killed by a man out of suspicion. Maria was headed for the prestigious beauty pageant Miss World 2014 but she could not make it to the event because of the misfortune. The man who murdered the two innocent ladies is supposed to face up to 20 long years in jail for the beauty queen’s murder and up to 40 years for murdering Sofia, her sister.
It is seen as a hate crime that involves the intended killing of a woman on account of her gender, that follows a greater sentence. The mother of two said, “We are not happy. Both cases were femicides and we might put in an appeal. Sofia was shot eight times and Maria Jose 16 times,” she added.
The women were murdered on November 13' 2014 and their bodies were found hidden on the banks of a river. The man is said to be Sofia’s boyfriend and committed this brutal crime out of jealousy when he saw her dancing with another boy at a birthday party the very same night.
The source said- “Sofia had told her boyfriend that she and her sister wanted to leave the party and go back to their home, and this sparked an argument.” He ended up pulling out a pistol and shooting her. Instead of running away Maria Jose lay on top of her sister's body to try to shield her. She started to shout and scream at the boyfriend and he shot her too.” He added.
After the conviction process, armed policemen escorted Ruiz, the man behind the murder, out of the courtroom to a cell to wait till his sentencing in June.
