Former Miss Universe Lupita Jones in talks to run for the governorship of Baja California?

01 Feb 2021 | Angelique Reyes

Lupita Jones represented Mexico at Miss Universe 1991 on 17th May 1991 at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States and was crowned as the new Miss Universe 1991 as she became the first Mexican to win the title.  Since 1994, Lupita has been Mexico’s National Director for Miss Universe contest as is the franchise holder of Mexicana Universal.

The former queen could now enter politics since the National Action Party and its coalition are looking for a candidate to run for the governorship of Baja California and Lupita’s profile matches the profile the party is looking for. Leaders within the PAN party have mentioned that they will promote and support at least seven women candidates for governor in states throughout Mexico and if Lupita agrees, she could be one of them. "Derived from the consultations and talks with society's organizations, the proposal has been received so that the Mexican winner of the Miss Universe contest in 1991 Lupita Jones, is the one who heads the candidacy for governor by the Va Por Baja alliance California,” the party said.

"This proposal is in the phase of analysis of the parties and the next few days, from the construction of the appropriate consensus, a determination will be made, which will be jointly, and will be made publicly known to all sectors of the society that propose it, as well as the Baja Californians,” says the message addressed to public opinion through the media.

The deadline for the registration of candidacies in the entity began on 23rd December 2020 and the deadline for the same is 20th to 27th February 2021. Thus, the former queen has a period to define her decision and specify her possible candidacy. Lupita Jones is yet to comment on the matter but if she confirms, she would become of the seven candidates running for the governor.
