Pia Wurtzbach the reigning Miss Universe supports call to end violence against women

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach joined the fight to end violence against women during the event held in New York City on March 5, 2016.

Organized by the United Nations Women for Peace Association (UNWFPA), the event was the 4th annual #IWalk4Women rally aimed to raise awareness on violence and its effects on women worldwide.

Joined by Miss USA 2015 Olivia Jordan, Wurtzbach wore a red dress and black stirrup pumps, and posted their photos on her social media accounts. On Facebook, the 26-year-old beauty queen wrote, “At UN Women with Miss USA for March in March, supporting a cause near and dear to our hearts, to end violence against women across the universe. ?#‎Iwalk4women”

According to data by the UNWFPA, 1 in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence worldwide.

March is International Women’s Month and March 8th is declared as International Women’s Day. The UN began celebrating International Women’s Day since March 8, 1975. The official UN commemoration of International Women’s Day will be held on March 8, 2016, at the UN Secretariat in New York City.

Miss universe 2015, Wurtzbach continues her “confidently beautiful with a heart” reign as Miss Universe. She previously joined the “Dress in Blue” Day for colon cancer awareness and was recently named by the Aid for AIDS organization as HIV Prevention Ambassador.
