Costa Rica’s Ivonne Cerdas to wear ‘La Guaria’ inspired national costume at Miss Universe 2020

Miss Universe Costa Rica 2020 Ivonne Cerdas revealed her national costume for Miss Universe 2020 a few hours ago which has been designed by John Lecksell. The outfit has been inspired by the national flower of Costa Rica, the purple guarias. It is a stunning orchid shining with purple hues and thin, rounded petals. Based on their tradition, the flower brings good luck and fortune.

Sharing a mixed feeling of being heartbroken because of the country’s covid situation and the hope of getting through it, with her national costume as a symbol for the same, she took to her social media to reveal her costume where she wrote, “I imagined it differently, however, the reality of Costa Rica at the moment is not easy. We continue to break records for COVID-19 cases, and our hospital system is on the brink of collapse. I imagined it full of animals, in a colorful garden, surrounded by loved ones, wonderful shapes and colors. But this is our reality.”

Talking about her costume, Cerdas said, “I present you the purple guaria, national flower of my beautiful land that today cries for many of its children. The simple photos taken in my house surrounded by my bubble. Today more than ever, I hope to represent you well and I ask that we take care of each other.

Ivonne is very strong, determined, and confident with how she presents herself on-stage. If Ivonne Cerdas wins Miss Universe, she will be the beauty pageant’s first ever titleholder from Costa Rica. Ivonne has assured that she will perform her best at the competition of Miss Universe 2020 and make her country proud.

She would like to use the platform to advocate about women empowerment as she believes that only we know the courage it takes to expose ourselves in this way, and the dedication it takes to prepare for this day.

Miss Universe 2020 will host the National Costume competition on 13th May 2021 with a live broadcast. Miss Universe Costa Rica 2020 Ivonne Cerdas Cascante will represent Costa Rica at the 69th edition of Miss Universe on 16th May 2021 in the United States. The winner will succeed Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa for the title.
