Miss Universe, which began in 1952, is considered as one of most esteemed beauty pageants across the world. Each year, stunning beauties wear glam gowns, swimsuits and showcase national costumes to introduce their customs and traditions. These outfits are a reflection of the changing fashion trends, what’s in and what’s out and unique creations by the designers across the world.

Throughout the years, at Miss Universe, there have been looks that have become the showstoppers in the pageantry. The beauty queens have also become icons who are now the inspiration for the future generations to work towards bringing change.

Catriona Gray of the Philippines appeared onstage in a striking red gown, which came to be known as the lava gown, before her 2018 Miss Universe win. The gown featured a plunging asymmetrical neckline and was accessorized with sparkly earrings and a bold red lip.

Mariana Jesica Varela of Argentina wore a glittery beaded outfit that was complete with a feathery attachment a large, spiked crown. Although she didn’t place at Miss Universe 2019 but she definitely turned heads.

Lara Dutta of India at Miss Universe 2000

Lara Dutta of India became the first Miss Universe of the new millennium, wearing a slinky red dress. Her gown featured a modern one-shoulder design and a curve-hugging cut.

Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza of Puerto Rico at Miss Universe 2006

Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza of Puerto Rico was crowned Miss Universe 2006 while wearing this nearly see-through metallic dress that looks like it's made of magical chains. It was definitely one of the most daring looks at Miss Universe pageant.

Akiko Kojima of Japan at Miss Universe 1959

Akiko Kojima wowed in a traditional outfit before winning the 1959 event. She opted to compete in a printed kimono paired with a headdress. On her feet, Akiko Kojima wore sandals and tabi, traditional Japanese split-toed socks. Akiko became the first Japanese woman to win the crown

Georgina Rizk of Lebanon at Miss Universe 1971

Georgina Rizk of Lebanon wore a two-piece outfit was composed of a plunging top made of gauzy blue fabric and beads, along with matching silky pants and a voluminous hairstyle. She won the crown in 1971.

Cecilia Bolocco of Chile stunned in a sleeveless gown that featured a cascade of white and gold sequined feathers as she went on to win the Miss Universe 1987 crown.
