Miss Universe South Africa 2020 Natasha Joubert revealed her national costume for Miss Universe 2020 at an intimate event held on 11th April 2021. The event was a part of her Destiny Designed virtual fashion show which is aimed to empower local fashion designers whose business had been hard-hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. The show was hosted by Miss South Africa 2018 Tamaryn Green.

Almost a month ago, Natasha took to her social media to share that being a designer and owning a label; ‘Natalia Jefferys’, she understands that the fashion industry was one of the industries that were affected by the pandemic and invited the local designers to be a part of her campaign and share their entrepreneurship journey. The 12 designers were selected from almost 90 entries for the virtual fashion show and were further asked to create two garments each. Those garments were paraded by the finalists of Miss South Africa 2020 at the virtual fashion show of Destiny Designed held on 11th April 2021, which also featured Natalia Jeffery’s garments from Joubert’s couture store.

The outfits designed by the 12 final designers will be auctioned off online and the proceedings from each item sold will go to the respective designers and viewers had the opportunity to purchase a limited-edition custom-designed T-shirt in aid of the project.

At the end of the fashion show, Natasha walked on stage revealing her national costume for Miss Universe 2020 which is designed by Gert-Johan Coetzee who describes the outfit, “We wanted to create something special and proudly South Africa. We not only created a garment to show off our skills and for dramatic effect, but it also had to be something truly meaningful and represent a cause close to Natasha’s heart.” Gert also designed Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh’s final dress when she crowned her successor Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.

The gorgeous white beaded gown has an angelic silhouette courtesy of wing-like sleeves and a fluttering train, which has been printed with colorful drawings done by youngsters in Randburg and Diepsloot. “I will be carrying the children of South Africa with me when I walk onto the international stage in my national costume ... the artwork tells the story of preschool children’s very personal experiences of lockdown and how the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted their young lives,” added Natasha while revealing the costume on her social media.

Natasha also mentioned that the children were amazing and came up with images that truly reflected the regulations of lockdown. Some were funny, poignant, and meaningful; several of them drew the usual pre-school child’s image of the family, only the mum, dad, and brother and sisters were drawn far apart to show social distancing.

Designer Jolandie Fouche of Jolache Couture’s several evening gowns will accompany the beauty queen at Miss Universe 2020 competition and the designer stated, “These dresses are something different from what you have seen before. Our focus was on structure, hues of color, and mature elegance. I think South Africa will love what they see and Natasha, with her exceptional radiance, will stand out above in all these unique dresses.”

Miss Universe South Africa 2020 Natasha Joubert will represent South Africa at the 69th edition of Miss Universe on 16th May 2021 in the United States. The winner will succeed Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa for the title.
