Vietnam’s Nguyên Trân Khánh Vân reveals national costume ‘Ken Em’ at her send-off press conference for Miss Universe 2020

Miss Universe Vietnam organization held the send-off press conference for Nguyen Tran Khanh Van as she will be flying off to USA for the 69th Miss Universe. The conference was streamed live on the official Facebook page of Miss Universe Vietnam few hours ago. The event was hosted at Sheraton Saigon Hotel and Towers, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

During the conference, Nguyen paraded in front of the media and audience in a scintillating red gown as she entered the conference making it evident how confident and well-prepared she is to represent Vietnam at Miss Universe 2020 on 16th May 2021 in Florida, USA.

Apart from sending her off as she begins the journey at Miss Universe 2020, the conference was organised to unveil the national dress that Nguyen will be donning at the pageant on 13th May 2021 at the National Costume competition.

 

 

Initially there were in total eight designers who competing for the national costume of Miss Universe Vietnam 2020. The national costumes were judged based on aesthetics, creativity, and feasible and performance on stage and ‘Kén Em’ was announced as the official national costume for Miss Universe 2020. Khoa Lo is the designer for the national costume who was described as creative and enthusiastic with his work.

‘Kén Em’, is inspired by the silk weaving, a traditional handicraft in Vietnam for thousands of years. The designer mentioned, “The real fibre dress I have never seen before. I believe I will be one of the first young designers who pioneered the innovation of ao dai using new materials for Vietnamese ao dai.” It was further described as a “baby cocoon which is meticulous study of light, flying materials that will help Khanh Van to walk to create effects combining foreign macrame rope techniques.”

The National Costume Ken Em tells the story of process from silkworm to Vietnamese costume, highlighting the virtuous and patient spirit of the Vietnamese people. From the journey of growing mulberry trees, raising silkworms, pulling cocoons, spinning silk, weaving, and dyeing. Thereby the national costume expresses the hard work and endurance that each craftsman must overcome to create Vietnamese silk.

Silk weaving has penetrated deeply into the minds and history of Vietnamese people, containing and crystallizing multidimensional values in culture, art and the economy. The costume has applied 100% of meticulous hand-knitting technique. Inside the cocoon the bustling silk weaving profession is visualised through the image of reeling and pure white silk rolls.

 

 

This Ao Dai is the result of efforts and enthusiasm, conveying the message of continuity and development of traditional craft village in Vietnam. Nguyen has also been preparing for her international stint ever since her coronation with sincerity and determination. Nguyen’s preparations and the costume’s magnificence show potential of a strong combination to take Vietnam at the top of the competition.

Miss Universe 2020 will host the National Costume competition on 13th May 2021 with a live broadcast. Miss Universe Vietnam 2020 Nguyen Tran Khanh Van will represent Vietnam at the 69th edition of Miss Universe on 16th May 2021 in the United States. The winner will succeed Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa for the title.
