The ‘Carnival - An explosion of colour’ national costume is designed by Franklyn Jagdeo and Rickey Sookdeo of Hott Stuff Promotions. Sharing details about the conceptualization of the costume, Jeanine shared, “Carnival - An explosion of colour - depicts the vibrancy and energy that represents our carnival. The rainbow of people who makes up my country, coming together and joining as one for the greatest show on earth. The streets are filled with the most beautiful and colourful costumes moving to the rhythmic sounds of soca music and steel pan. This costume represents the beauty of my country, our people and our culture.”
Carnival celebrations are a big element of the Caribbean culture. Carnival is open to everyone and is about resistance in the form of joy and reclaiming spaces at its core. Carnival is a tradition that has endured through adversity, sacrifice, and defiance, and it continues to be a significant part of Caribbean identity and culture.
Trinidad is a melting pot of numerous ethnic groups, all of which have had a significant impact on Carnival and Trinidadian culture as we know it today. Carnival represents a holistic Caribbean identity.
