Miss Myanmar International began in 2012 and became a pioneer and an independent national pageant in Yangon, Myanmar. That year, Myanmar participated for the first time, since 1961, in an international beauty pageant as Miss International 2012 Nang Khin Zay Yar represented Myanmar.

Before the creation of Miss Myanmar or Miss Universe Myanmar pageant, the concerned pageant was Miss Burma. Myanmar debuted in 1961 with the name of Burma. In 1961 Myanmar competed at the Miss International pageant. Since 1962 the local pageant had been banned by the government for unknown reasons.
