Many contestants noted the wide streets and towering skyscrapers as their most unforgettable first impressions of Haikou. Miss Brazil and Miss Belgium also noted the profusion of coconut trees, which is what Haikou is essentially known for! The local population refers to the Hainan capital as the “coconut city”. Miss Curacao noted the number of motorcycles on the road as her most startling intuition of the city: “I couldn’t believe the number of motorcycles driving on the road. In Curacao, I see probably one motorcycle per day but here it seems like you see one hundred per second!”

Quite a few contestants had the occasion to be filmed for the popular Hainanese television show, Hainan Hobby, which allowed several contestants to strengthen their Chinese language skills. Miss Thailand, who is also fluent in Mandarin, as well as Thai and English, said the experience was etched in her mind forever, stating, “It allowed me to show to the Chinese public my love and admiration for them and their wonderful language and culture.”

Each family and child was a surprise for the contestants as they were given a number and to whichever family there number happened to match, they were paired with!

The contestants spent their time with the children in drawing and learning Chinese. Many ladies were overwhelmed by being able to interrelate and share love with the underprivileged children. Miss Georgia, who was paired with an energetic but adorable child later said, “I love being with kids and whenever I am participating in children’s charities, I always seem to attract children who were much like myself when I was younger – kids with lots of energy and high emotion. I guess it’s my destiny to work with kids!

Quite wonderful an experience, many of the children actually cried upon seeing the contestants, both out of awe and perplexity. For many of the young children participating in the event, it was there first time meeting a non-Chinese person, which proved to be quite a confronting incident. Miss Namibia expressed, “My child was a bit afraid and cried when she first saw me with my curly hair but once we started interacting and I got to learn some of her skills and expertise, she totally warmed up to me. It was an incredible feeling to see that with dialogue and compassion, communication in any language is possible!”
