Alex Evangelou-Shingler on her advocacy for the victims of domestic abuse for Miss England 2020

18 May 2020 | Ana Walia

Miss England 2020 will be hosting its grand coronation ceremony later this year where gorgeous beauties from all over the country will compete for the national crown and the opportunity to represent England in Miss World 2020. Miss England 2019 Bhasha Mukherjee will crown her successor at the end of the event finale.

When the regional semis were axed recently due to coronavirus outbreak and with the July final now also in jeopardy – the Miss England Organization has refused to let that kill their beauty queen dreams by strutting their stuff on film instead of wowing the judges in person to make the final cut. It’s the first time in the competition’s 92-year history that these beauty pageants have had to go virtual. The glitzy final was meant to be held in Birmingham’s Hilton Hotel in July but this now looks in doubt too due to the lockdown.

Miss Midlands 2020 finalist Alex Evangelou-Shingler is 23-years-old and stands 167 cm tall. She is a second-year social work student at Oxford Brookes and has recently opened about her advocacy for the competition. The diva is working with Elle for Elle; voluntary organisation which helps the victims of the domestic abuse. Miss England organization had asked all the finalists to work with charities and help in promoting them. Alex was very pleased and keen to volunteer for charity and that is how the diva started to work for Elle for Elle.

Explaining about her work and the foundation, Alex revealed, “With Elle for Elle, as soon as I saw it I fell in love with it because it helps give a woman’s confidence back. They go into safe houses and help women of domestic abuse, who often have nothing after leaving their lives behind. Little things like face masks and face creams help give them a confidence boost.”

Alex chose this foundation to work with because as a teenager, Alex was exposed to violence and abuse from one of her family members. They would lock her outside on cold nights and force her to watch recreational drugs being taken. That person was married into her family and because of the act broke her confidence and self-esteem.

Later, when she was 20-years old, she was endured into a ‘toxic’ relationship which her partner would control her, stop her from visiting her friends and family, would always keep an eye on her every move and control her social media accounts as well. She took a step and walked out of that relationship and is now doing so much better and trying to help the ones who face the same things like once she did.

Alex participated in Miss England 2018 after she saw an advertisement on Facebook. Later she enrolled herself in and was one of the finalists in Miss Birmingham 2018 but unfortunately couldn’t win. She enrolled herself again in Miss England 2020 and is one of the finalists in Miss Midlands 2020. She feels extremely blessed that beauty pageants give people a chance to work for the charities and organizations. She feels that organizations like Elle for Elle are doing for the ones who can not do anything for themselves or have given up and she feels very lucky to be a part of it.

The diva who had faced abuse, exploitation, and toxic environment explained that she is all well and healthy now and beauty pageant has helped to gain her confidence and self-esteem back. She is working on herself and body. She is thankful to the organization who has given her a chance to make a difference in the society by sharing her experience. If she wins Miss Midlands 2020, she will represent Midland at Miss England 2020 and would use the platform to reach to a massive audience with her message.

Alex is strong, a survivor, and determined to win the title. She wants to prove that nothing can break people until they break their self-worth themselves. She has a great and impactful advocacy and would be a strong contender for the title.
