08 Feb 2018 | Irina Silva

Lauren McDonagh has represented her county at the finals at Dublin's Crowne Plaza Hotel. McDonagh, a Health and Social Care student, works part-time as a beauty therapist and beat out tough competition from 26 other contestants vying for the Miss Ireland 2017 crown, and for all the right reasons it seems. Lauren has been tenaciously working for the welfare of her community.

She has various associations with non-profit organisations and volunteer work under her belt. The beauty queens been taking her reign very seriously and is upholding her end of the Miss Ireland contract.

Her latest association has been with the cause of Muscular Dystrophy. Muscular dystrophy is a rare, and potentially life-limiting, the muscle-wasting condition that is estimated to affect approximately 1,500 people across Ireland. There is no known cure.

In early 2016 Muscular Dystrophy Ireland launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the condition, and the need to raise vital funds for the support it provides.

Ahead of the LOVEMDI Campaign and National Awareness Day 2018 from February 11th - 17th, Lauren announced her association with the cause through an Instagram post.

The LOVEMDI Campaign is a fundraising and national awareness initiative which coincides with Valentine's Day each year will run from 11th to 17th February 2018.

According to Muscular Dystrophy Ireland’s website, the LOVEMDI campaign will once again:

Ask our members, friends and colleagues to share their stories and experiences (using the hastag ?#‎LOVEMDI) by telling us “why they ?#‎LOVEMDI?

Created further awareness by enabling our members and friends to make more people aware of the challenges faced by people living with muscular dystrophy and their families, and the positive impact which Muscular Dystrophy Ireland supports and services have on their lives.

Help to raise funds by facilitating the continued sales of the ever popular Lily O’Brien chocolates among our network of supporters and also encouraging members of the public to donate €2 by simply texting 'LOVEMDI' to 50300*.

Lauren will be launching LOVEMDI Week at MDI Head Office on Monday 12th February and the members are invited to join the event from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm for a Valentine's Tea Party and more activities.
