The 22-year-old South African beauty Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters created history on 27th November 2018 as she was crowned the second ever Miss Universe from South Africa, breaking a 39-year pageant drought for her country.

But before that, Demi-Leigh was crowned Miss South Africa 2017 on 26th March 2017 beating 12 other finalists for the national crown. As the date suggests, Demi-Leigh has just completed one year of her reign as Miss South Africa 2018 and four months as Miss Universe 2017.

The Miss Universe 2017 queen took to her Instagram to share the final moment of her crowning with her 1 million followers –

After her crowning as Miss South Africa 2017, Demi-Leigh won the right to represent South Africa at Miss World 2017 as well as Miss Universe 2017. But due to the coinciding of the two pageants, Demi-Leigh went to Nevada to participate in Miss Universe 2017.

The journey to her crowning as Miss Universe 2017 has been nothing short of spectacular. As Demi-Leigh shined bright since the beginning of the competition, there was never any doubt about her being the next reigning queen.

Ever since her crowning, Demi-Leigh has advocated the importance of self-defence to as many women as possible. Her advocacy has helped so many women gain courage and stand up for right things, which is a huge accomplishment in itself.
