The Miss USA 2017 pageant has finally concluded and we are in love with the newly crowned Miss USA 2017. 25 year old Kara McCullough is a physical scientist at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. During her time at Miss USA, McCullough received media attention and praise for deciding to compete with her natural hair, which was seen as support for the natural hair movement.

There were a lot of highlights and lowlights at the finale of Miss USA 2017, but we are only going to talk about the highlights of the night. The moment that won ours and millions of hearts was the moment when Miss USA 2016 Deshauna Barber decided to take her final walk with afro hair. The Miss USA 2017 pageant was held on Mother's Day, but one special mom couldn't be in attendance for Sunday's crowning.
To brief you, Deshauna lost her mom few months after she was crowned Miss USA 2016. "Now that my mother has passed on I can be honest about my crowning moment. I have lied to a lot of people.... Telling interviewers that I was so dramatically emotional because I worked so hard to be on that stage," she wrote. "The truth is, I was emotional because my mom was in her home fighting for her life and there was nothing I could do to help her. I told myself that the least thing I could do for my mother was to make her proud by bringing the Miss USA crown home to our family," she shared in one of her Instagram posts months ago.

During the finals of Miss USA 2017, Deshauna revealed in a taped segment that she will be paying a special tribute to her mother, Cordelia Barber,who died of lung cancer shortly after she won the Miss USA crown. To honor her mom's memory, Barber announced she'd be wearing an afro onstage as a touching tribute to her mom's own hair.
Twitteratis whole heartedly accepted Barber’s beautiful tribute and also applauded her for such a touching move. The former Miss USA was showered with love and support from social media.
