The preliminary competition of the Miss Universe 2016 pageant was held on 26th January 2017 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City of the Philippines, the host country of Pia Wurtzbach who is the reigning beauty queen as well as the host for the night. Pia along with Derek Ramsay made a delightful duo when it came to hosting the show. The event started with each contestant introducing themselves one by one. Eminent personalities such as Riyo Mori, Rob Goldstone, Francine Lefrak, Cynthia Bailey, Fred Nelson, and Dayanara Torres were present as judges for the preliminary competition.

The preliminary competition of the Miss Universe pageant consisted of two rounds, the swimwear competition, and the evening gown competition. This year’s eighty six contestant came up the stage in their gorgeous swimsuits and impressed the judges with their amazing walks and eye-catching smiles. As the spectators clapped for the beauties, the judges at the preliminary competition noted down the scores for the round. These scores along with the scores of the evening gown round will help decide the Top 12 delegates of this year.

With the changed format of the Miss Universe finale, that is the announcement of Top 12-9-6-3, performing well at the preliminary rounds were very important for the ladies who want a place at the finale to compete further for the rounds. The finale will start will the announcement of these pre-determined Top 12 names. After the swimsuit competition, it was time for the evening gown round. The contestants walked in extravagantly gorgeous gowns, making it even more difficult for the judges to decide who to keep in the Top 12.

The makeup and hair partners for the Miss Universe 2016 preliminaries were MAC Cosmetics and CHI Haircare. They will be giving the services to the delegates again at the finale. After the preliminary rounds, the National Costume competition was filmed.
