On Monday, 27th April 2020, the people of South Africa commemorated 26-years since South Africa took final steps to end the long walk to freedom in the historic election of 27th April 1994. South Africans rejoiced at their first ever fully inclusive democratic election, which saw Nelson Mandela elected as their first president under black majority rule, ending decades of apartheid.
But the ongoing situation of the pandemic in the entire world has obligated President Cyril Ramaphosa to announce the lockdown in the country. He has been praised for decisive action to curb the epidemic in Africa's most industrialized country,"South Africans have come together like never before to wage the struggle against this virus”, he told the country. But our queens Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi and Miss South Africa 2019 Sasha-Lee Laurel Olivier have plans to celebrate the day in their own ways.
Our Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa took to her social media to congratulate the people of her country on the Freedom Day. She shared a sweet story from her childhood where she stated that she was 7 months old when her mother carried on her back to vote for the very first time as a black South African. This came after years of struggle and fighting for the liberation of black people.“Today, every South African of every race can vote,” she stated.
Zozibini mentioned that she is very proud to be a South African and feels immensely blessed and honored to be a part of such beautiful country. She has mentioned that she will always be grateful to the ones who have fought for the freedom of the country and she will always keep them in her prayers. Zozi said, “Most of them never lived to see the day but may we remember them every day when we enjoy some of the freedoms, they paid a very high price for”.
Miss South Africa 2019 Sasha-Lee Laurel Olivier also wished the people of South Africa a very happy Freedom Day. Shasha uploaded a video on her social media account where she is seen doing actions to the national anthem of the country. She used her hands to show that how proud she is to be a part of a country like South Africa.
The Miss Universe Organization shared some clips and behind the scene videos of Zozibini’s homecoming earlier this year. The queens are celebrating the Freedom Day at their respective homes but not even the pandemic could bump the mood of the queens. They feel proud and blessed and their social media posts states the same.
Happy Freedom Day South Africa!
