08 Jul 2020 | Camilla Suarez

Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa not only created history when she was crowned Miss Universe 2019 on 8th December 2019 at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, United States but she also challenged the beauty norms of the society when she paraded with her natural hair on stage.

Zozibini is also the first black woman to win the Miss Universe crown since Leila Lopes from Angola won the title in 2011. She is an activist who fights against the gender-based violence and wants to normalize the beauty standards across the globe. Tunzi said during the pageant, "I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me with my kind of skin and my kind of hair was never considered to be beautiful. And I think that's time that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine."

Zozibini’s win changed the stereotypes of beauty standards across the globe and when she spoke about being comfortable in one’s own skin was, that statement hit everyone. Being a beauty queen of colour was not always considered as beautiful by the society but Zozi this was something she had to step out of and embrace her colour and help millions of people like her to do the same. The journey of self-acceptance takes a long time and is a process someone needs to understand very deeply but Zozi was assured that she must set an example for the younger generation and she surely did. She now uses her influence to promote self-acceptance and continues to challenge beauty standards that continue to taunt many women and girls.

One thing that is Zozi known for her is her confidence which is the key reason why she was able to steal so many hearts by her win. She explained in one of her interview that she never grew up with a role model who resembled her which made her think that maybe she is not what she think she is but after a while she realized that she has to be the role model for herself and for doing that she needed to build up her confidence and that’s why Zozi tells that she wakes up every day and looks in the mirror and compliments herself. She states that she needs that kind of motivation and support and if it comes within then bet it.

Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi displays thorough understanding of this through her style, her makeup, and the way she carries herself. The nude lip and golden glow comprise her go-to makeup look which never fails. She lets her simple yet classy look speak volume for her. The diva believes that one must feel beautiful from inside to look beautiful from the outside and that’s how she does it. It reflects who you are as a human being and how you affect the lives of others. In embracing her authentic self, the diva has tried to encourage and empower young girls to learn how to accept themselves and embrace their beauty. As Zozi says, the power to feel powerful is within you we just must recognize it. Lastly, Zozi has taught many of us to stay true to oneself and not give in to the standards of beauty according to the society and not question our beautiful bodies and colour. True beauty lies in understanding that you’re beautiful in your own way, and that you do not have to look like anybody else.
