The National Costume Competition of 71st Miss Universe was held on Wednesday, 11th January 2022 at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in Louisiana, USA. The contestants paraded in their national costumes showcasing their respective countries’ cultures and traditions.
While all the delegates gave impressive performances while representing their beautiful cultures, here are our favorites from the National Costume Competition of Miss Universe 2022 –
Celeste Cortesi Miss Universe Philippines 2022
The National costume is designed by Oliver Tolentino with headpiece and some metalwork accessories by Jerome Navarro. Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Celeste Cortesi transforms into Philippines’ iconic superhero, Darna. Celeste embodies a cultural icon that symbolizes kindness, empathy, and empowerment.
Ivana Batchelor Miss Universe Guatemala 2022
Ivana presented ‘Immortal Guatemala - Jaguar of the Americas’ costume. It showed the world the beauty of Guatemala, a country that has 3,000 years of cultural richness. Within the framework of the National Palace of Culture, which is identified as the symbol of Guatemala City and the country in its monumental architectural context.
Zar Li Moe Miss Universe Myanmar 2022
Zar Li Moe presented ‘Queen of Lotus’ costume at the competition. The costume was created and sewn from linen woven with lotus thread in the Inle region from Myanmar. Inle Lake is one of Myanmar's most famous tourist destinations. Since many years ago, it was a proprietary tradition to make lotus yarn from the lotus tusks that grew in this lake and use it to create and sew handloom fabrics, so the lotus yarn is very natural and valuable.
Sophiya Bhujel Miss Universe Nepal 2022
Sophiya showcased ‘Shakti – The Divine Feminine’ national costume. the team took inspiration from Shakti, the fountain of creation, the source of it all. The costume was created by Womens Planet Nepal while the concept is Prerana Shah’s. Sophiya looks absolutely transcendental in the costume portraying the culture and traditions of Nepal.
Solaria Barba Miss Universe Panama 2022
Solaris presented ‘Bridge of the World, Heart of the Universe’ national costume which is an artistic representation full of fantasy designed by Virgilio Batista. The national costume is inspired by the concept of haute couture in colors: (golden, red, blue, black, yellow and green). The foam carving, the embroidery technique, the feathering and the molding technique with metals and Swarovski crystals as elements were implemented that highlight our culture, dances and traditions, as well as our historical legacy. All this process of design and confection has been elaborated in an artisanal way. On the back, a heart that symbolizes the love of Panamanians for all people who visit the country.
Ashley Ann Carino Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2022
Ashley, through her national costume, paid homage to the Arecibo Radiotelescope. The costume also represents Puerto Rico’s Miss Universe winners from the past which includes Marisol Malaret, Deborah Carthy Deu, Dayanara Torres, Denise Quiñones, Zuleyka Rivera, Roberto Clemente, Tito Trinidad, Mónika Puig. The national costume was designed and built by Puerto Rican artists and also mechanical engineers. has 42 biodegradable plastic pieces designed and printed in 3D format. The elements specifically form and represent the main reflector and the Gregorian dome of the Arecibo Radio Telescope.
R’Bonney Nola Miss Universe USA 2022
R’Bonney Nola prepresented ‘Woman on the Moon’ costume at the competition. The purpose of the costume was to inspire women in all spaces across the universe to dream big, shoot for the moon and achieve something out of this world.
Ngoc Chau Miss Universe Vietnam 2022
Ngoc Chau presented ‘Chiau Cà Mau’ national costume at the competition. Inspired by the beauty of culture and people in the mat weaving village, the costume carries the story of children, peaceful, simple people in the southernmost part of the country. The new scented mats reflected the colors of luck and happiness, bringing hope to light up ambitions for a bright future. The simple, idyllic mat has yet been attached to so many people, through many generations and still exists until today.
Bárbara Cabrera Miss Universe Argentina 2022
Bárbara Cabrera showcased ‘Iguazú Falls’ national costume at the competition. Iguazú Falls are a constant source of inspiration, not only because of the magnitude of their singular beauty, but also because they call for reflection on the importance of the value and care that nature deserves on our planet. This typical suit is based on a natural and recyclable concept made up of a combination of different materials and elements that aim to convey a clear message through the language of clothing. Completely handmade, this creation combines embroidery techniques in crystal rhinestones, beads, pearls and fringes. From the back, the waterfalls are represented by cascades of synthetic boas, worked in different planes to achieve effects of moving water.
María Fernanda Aristizábal Miss Universe Colombia 2022
María Fernanda Aristizábal presented the national costume ‘The Phoenix Queen’ at the competition. She looked absolutely stunning at the preliminaries emerging as one of the strongest contenders for Miss Universe 2022 crown.
Amanda Dudamel Miss Universe Venezuela 2022
Amanda wore the national costume created by Simon Villalba. The outstanding creation symbolizes the discipline and commitment of each Venezuelan who represents our tricolor in every part of the world. She stood out in the long-awaited competition in typical costume. The mettle, discipline, commitment and work of our sports athletes, beauty queens and all Venezuelans who represent Venezuela in different latitudes, dress behind our Vinotinto color to bring a message of joy and strength to the world.
Divita Rai Miss Universe India 2022
Divita wore the national costume ‘Sone Ki Chidiya’ designed by Abhishek Sharma. The costume is inspired from the ethereal portrayal of India as the golden bird which is a symbol of wealth of our rich cultural heritage along with the spiritual essence of living in harmony with diversity. The intense gold metallic hand embellishments is a true example of the finest craftsmanship of our artisans. The lehenga is made from a hand-woven tissue fabric from Chandheri District of Madhya Pradesh with the drape representing the image of a modern India.
