Beauty pageants are a great platform to get instant fame, and if you are among the popular contestants, nothing like it. Miss Universe Canada Siera Bearchell instantly became the topic of discussion as the Miss Universe 2016 pageant kicked in. Critics and haters body shamed her for her weight, and it was all over the internet. But, what got her to fame was her way of handling her haters.

Siera has been overwhelmed by the international attention that she has been receiving for her stance against body shaming. “I still am speechless about it,” Bearchell said during a recent interview. “I didn’t know that I just saying something would be so impactful.” Prime Minister’s wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau also responded to Bearchell’s Facebook post which said, “There is beauty beyond size. There is beauty beyond walking on stage in a bikini. There is beauty beyond looking a particular way. It’s time to realize that true beauty, self-worth and validation start from within.”
Bearchell was the first runner-up at Miss Canada 2013 pageant. “I’m thankful I didn’t win then, because I didn’t have the same values and maturity as I do now.” She also represented Canada at Miss Supranational 2014 pageant. She worked really hard to fit into the expected mould. “I was not good to myself. And no matter how much weight I lost or what I looked like, I still didn’t feel good enough,” she said. “I told myself I would never do that again because it did not align with my values and my goals,” she added.

According to Bearchell, She was fit and yet she was heavenly criticised. “People said I was overweight and fat and that I looked like I was pregnant and all kinds of things. Of course, I knew that wasn’t true.”
“People would Photoshop images of me to make me look worse than I was. It’s almost entertaining, but quite sad to know that people around the world were trying to bring these women down who earned the right to represent their country at an international competition,” she said.

She has received messages from women of all ages who tell her, “you helped change my perception of who I am. I can finally accept who I am.”
On other hand, Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova, who reviewed the Miss Universe 2016 pageant, also talked about the Canadian beauty and shared her views. Natalie said, “I honestly think Canada could have won the crown, had she worked on her body and looked the way she did last year. I was Siera’s biggest fan when she won Miss Canada and even before that, and always felt she had huge potential to be the 3rd Miss Universe from Canada. In the end, as we see, it takes more to win, and I think Siera missed her chance. While her message of body confidence is a very important one to young women, what I think is even more important to tell the younger generation is that if you settle for what you have and don’t work to improve yourself, it can only get you so far, but with a bit more perseverance and determination, you can go all the way to the top! The new generation is at a risk of feeling entitled and spoiled by getting ribbons for participation and trophies for coming in last, so if we don’t teach them that it takes hard work, sacrifice, discipline, setting goals, and never settling for less, we stand to have very unsatisfied and unfulfilled generation of young people, who never truly get to live their dream.”
