Countries with most national costume awards at Miss Universe

Miss Universe is one of the most esteemed competitions in the world of pageantry. While it is one of the four major beauty pageants, Miss Universe still remains the most loved and most watched pageant out of all and one of the most valued and prestigious titles in the world.

In honor of Miss Universe 2020 i.e. scheduled to happen on 16th May 2021 in Florida USA, we're taking a look back at all the countries with the most National Costume wins. The National Costume Show is a separate part of the pageant and doesn't count towards contestants' overall scores. It's a chance for them to honor and celebrate their countries. The National Costume rounds were only introduced in 1960. It later became a pageant staple and has become a viewer-favorite over the years.

Miss Universe 2020 will host the National Costume competition on 13th May 2021 with a live broadcast. With the upcoming edition of the national costume showcase, let us have a look at the countries who have bagged the most wins at this segment of the competition. So, without any further ado, here are some of the best national costumes in Miss Universe history –

Thailand

Thailand tops the list with six national costume wins to their name. They won the national costume competition in 1969 with Sangduan Manwong, 1988 with Porntip Nakhirunkanok, 2005 with Chananporn Rosjan, 2008 with Gavintra Photijak, 2010 with Fonthip Watcharatrakul and 2015 with Aniporn Chalermburanawong.

Colombia

Colombia ties with Thailand at the first position also with six national costume wins. They won the titles in 1968 with Luz Elena Restrepo González, 1985 with Sandra Eugenia Borda Caldas, 1990 with Lizeth Mahecha, 1991 with Maribel Gutiérrez, 1997 with Claudia Vásquez and 2002 with Vanessa Mendoza.

Brazil

Brazil secures the second position with four national costume wins. They carried the titles in 1967 with Carmen Ramasco, 1981 with Adriana Alves de Oliveira, 1987 with Jacqueline Meirelles and 1989 with Flávia Cavalcanti.

Panama

Panama acquires the second position with Brazil again with four national costume wins under them. They earned the titles in 1986 with Gilda García López, 2004 with Jessica Rodríguez, 2009 with Diana Broce and 2011 with Sheldry Sáez.

South Korea

South Korea stands right next to Brazil and Panama on the second position also with four wins at the national costume competition. They won the competition in 1974 with Kim Jae-kyu, 1977 with Kim Sung-hee, 1983 with Jong-jun Kim and 2001 with Kim Sa-rang.

India

India claims the third position with three wins for the national costume. The country won titles in 1978 with Alamjeet Kaur Chauhan, 1980 with Sangeeta Bijlani and 1984 with Juhi Chawla.

Peru

Peru also stands at the third position with three wins at the national costume competition. They secured the titles in 1972 with Carmen Ampuero, 1976 with Rocío Lazcano and 1982 with María Francesca Zaza.

These seven countries have been enjoying these positions for past many years, but with Gazini Ganados having won the best national costume for Philippines in Miss Universe 2019 and a previous win in 1994, Philippines has a strong chance at securing a position in the list.

Miss Universe 2020 is all set to host its Preliminary and National Costume Competition in a back-to-back stream on 13th May 2020 in Florida, USA. The National Costume Competition will witness the delegates parading in their traditional costumes representing the culture and traditions of their countries.
