The Miss Universe Ghana 2015 pageant which concluded during the weekend is clouded with a pool of controversies. Hilda Akua who was crowned as the winner at the finals of Miss Universe Ghana 2015 is not quite beaming with joy after the win. The very first controversy that surrounds the pageant is its increasing dependency on Ghanaian beauties based overseas.

Hilda is based in the United States, also former contestants; Awurama Simpson (2010) and Yayra Erica Nego (2011, who was also a Miss USA contestant) have been a part of the trend that claims of sidelining the local beauties. This incident spread its claws so much so that, despite of being the favourite, this year’s contestant Aisha, did not even make it to the Top 5. And not so surprisingly, the Top 5 were from the United States.

Fans and the pageant followers claim that Aisha was sidelined despite being miles ahead of Hilda. Few often claim that it was because of her religion that Aisha didn’t make it to the Top 5 slot. She is a Muslim. Giving fuel to the fire, there is yet another allegation that follows the pageant, which claims partiality. This incident happen during the Question and Answer round, where Hilda was not suppose to be the last one to answer. But somehow, her position was swapped which ignited the rumour that she already heard the question and also the answers before her turn.

All of these controversies had the Ghanaian crowd venting out their fury and anger on social media. The frustration has gone up to the level where people are even questioning the credibility of the pageant and the organisation. Beauty pageants these days come handy with controversies clogging the authenticity and realism with which a pageant must be conducted.
