Nicaragua’s Ana Marcelo to represent joy and tradition of ‘La Gritería’ through her national costume at Miss Universe 2020

The Miss Nicaragua organization revealed Ana Marcelo’s national costume for Miss Universe 2020 on 17th April 2021, through a social media post mentioning, ‘Alegría Y Tradición La Gritería En León’ will be worn with great pride by Ana Marcelo to represent Nicaragua to the Universe. The costume is designed by Jorge Salazar, a talented designer of Nicaragua.

‘La Griteria en Leon’ is the inspiration of designer Jorge Salazar for the costume. La Griteria, which roughly translates to ‘the yelling’, is a Catholic holiday in Nicaragua. It is a boisterous celebration where Nicaraguan religious followers pray and sing traditional songs before an altar with an image of Virgin Mary, who is also the patroness of the United States.

The work on the costume is the living representation of the joy and hubbub that is experienced every year when the screaming arrives, considered the most characteristic popular festival of Nicaraguans and the one that best portrays the national identity of Nicaragua.

The costume is made with handicrafts made by our artisans: fans, chichiles, whistles, noisemakers, hats that enhance each of the pieces that make up this beautiful creation that balances artisanal and fantasy.
