Erica Robin’s debut in Miss Universe 2023 sparks outrage in Pakistan

Erica Robin was crowned Miss Universe Pakistan 2023 on 14th September 2023 at the finale held in Maldives. However, the winner has now sparked controversy and outrage in Pakistan as the conservative voices in the country are challenging the country’s representation.

People are saying that Erica is representing a country which does not want to be represented as beauty pageants are quite rare in Muslim dominated countries. 2023 Miss Universe will mark the very first time that Pakistan will compete at the international pageant.

Erica, however, wishes to change the mindset of people that Pakistan is a backward country but this controversy challenges exactly that. “It feels great to represent Pakistan. But I don't understand where the backlash is coming from. I think it is this idea that I would be parading in a swimsuit in a room full of men”, Erica quotes.

To make matters worse, the caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has also asked the country's intelligence agency to launch a case against the organisers of the event to find out how they were able to hold the pageant without Pakistan's approval.

Erica will be travelling to El Salvador to compete at Miss Universe 2023, the 72nd edition of Miss Universe, which will be held at the National Gymnasium in San Salvador, El Salvador on 18th November 2023 where Miss Universe 2022 R'Bonney Gabriel of the United States will crown her successor at the end of the event finale.
