10 Apr 2019 | Angelique Reyes

Angela Ponce created history when she became the first transwoman to win the national pageant of Miss Universe Spain 2018 and garnered worldwide attention for her unprecedented achievement. She also became the first openly transgender contestant to compete for the 67th edition of Miss Universe i.e. Miss Universe 2018 which held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The gorgeous Angela has been vocal about her support for the LGBTQ+ community and has been an incredible representative for the people of her community. She has wished for the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the society with respect and dignity whoare otherwise marginalised or bullied.

However, the reigning beauty queen seemed to have embroiled herself in a controversy with another beauty queen Miss Grand International 2018 Clara Sosa. In an interview, Clara Sosa was asked about the participation of transgender women in beauty contestants and the beauty queen did not seem very supportive of the idea. In fact, she stated that it is “unfair”. She even jokingly remarked that it is unfair as they (transgender woman) are never going to have cellulite.

The question which was asked to her was “What do you tell me when you go to a women's beauty contest and what happens with transgenders, with people who want to participate in the same contest?

The diva expressed that if a woman wants to participate in the contest by transgender they will simply not allowed to participate. It is forbidden, however, in female beauty contestants they (transgenders) can participate which seems unfair. Clara also remarked that “Suddenly it seems to me that many girls cannot say their opinion while being in a contest because if the organization already accepted it, you already have to accept.”

The current Miss Universe Spain 2018 presented her view by replying back to Clara’s remarks by putting up an Instagram story which said, “While some change history, others live in prehistory.” The diva has been receiving a lot of support from her fans and people of the LGBTQ+ community.
