Tate Fritchley of Vanderburgh County became the 58th woman to be crowned Miss Indiana State Fair 2016. The beauty queen is a senior at Evansville North High School, and defeated  87 other county queens to win the title, on Sunday afternoon at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

After a carefully-timed Steve Harvey joke, she was announced the winner, succeeding Mady Hayden of Hendricks County.

Fritchley is a 10-year 4-H member who plans to attend the University of Evansville and study physical therapy. After college, she wants to become a sports physical therapist. She has been a member of the soccer team and varsity cheerleading squad for four years, and currently is the captain of the cheerleading squad. She has also earned all-state academic honors two years straight.

During the final day of competition, Fritchley was asked what she considered to be the biggest problem facing young women today.

“I believe that body shaming is a very important issue that we face,” Fritchley responded. “A lot of times we look at magazines and, we think, ‘We should look like that.’ But really, as long as you’re confident in who you are, that’s what really matters.”

The event also saw Hayden take her final walk as queen. She capped the day by singing alongside her fellow Purduettes, members of Purdue University’s all-female vocal ensemble, when they performed a number of selections in the moments leading up to Fritchley’s crowning.

“I’ve had an amazing year, and I’ve grown tremendously as a person since I was crowned last January,” Hayden said during her final speech as reigning queen. “I am so excited to crown someone new so that they can start their yearlong journey and learn just how amazing the state that they live in is.”

Hayden also left Fritchley with a few words of wisdom, encouraging her to stay positive throughout her reign as queen..

At the same event, Alivia Roberts of Whitley County was adjudged first runner-up, while Shelby Lamb of Boone County was titled second runner-up. Kristen Stevens of Putnam County was named third runner-up, and Courtney Hinton of Madison County was titled fourth runner-up. Taking home the title of Miss Congeniality was Emily Bertsch of Wells County.
