In a shocking development today, Miss Universe Thailand 2014 Weluree Ditsayabut has renounced her title over remarks she made on social media including one that redshirt activists – the supporters of ousted Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra – should all be executed.
She announced her decision to relinquish her crown during a press conference held at the Renaissance Hotel in Bangkok today.
"I felt under pressure. I tried to improve myself but what I could not stand was to see my mother stressed," Weluree said.
Weluree Ditsayabut, 22, was crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2014 on May 17th, 2014 at Royal Paragon Hall, Siam Paragon in Bangkok. However, right after her coronation, comments she made months earlier soon surfaced, including one on her Facebook account, referring to the red shirts, which said: “I am so angry at all these evil activists. They should all be executed.”
That’s the reason why she has been under “waves of criticism from the society”. She decided to resign after seeing her mother losing sleep because of her.
As of now, it is not clear whether first runner up Pimbongkod Chankaew would replace Weluree as Thailand’s representative at Miss Universe 2014. Organizers of the pageant said they will have to talk with each individual contestant before making the final decision.
