The 1977 edition of the Miss Universe pageant was won by Trinidad and Tobago beauty Janelle Commissiong. Janelle was a popular candidate during the pageant, but was never a favourite. It was when she was voted Miss Photogenic, she started gaining the limelight and slowly became a favourite too. During her reign, she was an advocate for black rights and world peace. Commissiong was awarded the Trinity Cross, the country's highest award, in 1977. Three postage stamps were also issued in her honour.
