Former Miss World Kaiane Aldorino has been appointed as the mayor of Gibraltar. The beauty queen was recently honoured by the outgoing mayor Adolfo Canepa and Chief Minister Fabian Picardo at an investiture ceremony at City Hall. The former beauty queen said that she feels honoured after becoming the Gibraltar’s youngest ever mayor.

Kaiane shared her happiness during the event, and said that it was a ‘great privilege’ to be named as the new Mayor. She even praised Canepa for his work during his second tenure in the role. She accepted the key to Gibraltar and wore her Mayoral robes for the first time. What was also interesting was the fact that Miss World Organisation chairman Julia Morley was also present at the event.
During her speech, Kaiane revealed that Miss World would be donating $10,000 (£8,000) to Gibraltar based charities. Kaiane has been a household name in Gibraltar, following her spectacular Miss World win in 2009. Talking about Kaiane’s popularity, the outgoing Adolfo Canepa said, “Kaiane has become an institution. In Gibraltar, Kaiane doesn’t need a surname. Everyone knows who Kaiane is. In a similar way to Winston being Churchill or Garcia Lorca being known as Federico.”
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said Kaiane represented a ‘new generation’ of Gibraltar women. “Kaiane Aldorino became Miss World. She was someone who carried the dreams of Gibraltarians around the world, Asking her to become Mayor was something that the House was able to do unanimously,” said Picardo. “You were Miss Gibraltar; you were Miss World now you are Mrs Mayor.”
Kaiane Aldorino, who was born on 8 July 1986’, is a Gibraltarian dancer and beauty queen and was crowned Miss Gibraltar 2009 and Miss World the same year in Johannesburg, South Africa. She was the first Miss Gibraltar ever to clinch the coveted Miss World 2009 title.

The beauty queen has been a dancer since the age of 14 with Urban Dance Group, and is experienced in performing locally and abroad. She has performed in Gibraltar and Spain, and is trained in modern, hip hop, contemporary and commercial styles of dancing.
