5 times when beauty pageant winners were unapologetically empowered in 2017!

08 Mar 2018 | Angelique Reyes

Our beauty queens surely are women cut from the same cloth. These girls support each other throughout the competitions and start something beautiful together every year. Last year too, these women made changes to the ‘normal’ events of beauty pageants and celebrated their feminism above all.

These beauty queens are the real celebration of Women’s Day. All year, beauty Queens like PiaWurtzbach and Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, made being a woman a little more rewarding by showing their support to a fellow queen, or by showing their inner strength and smartness.

Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

“I saw them approaching me, three to my left and another on the other side, and I knew by their eyes what they were coming to do. I was petrified but prepared for what was coming. I had at least three guns pointed at me. I climbed out of the car but they told me to climb back in because I was coming with them,” said Demi as she recalled the incident. According to a report by a leading daily, Demi-Leigh had just finished her driver’s safety lessons and kicked into defense mode right away. She punched one of her attackers in the throat!

If that isn’t an empowered woman, we don’t know what is!

Miss Peru 2017 contestants

At the gala night of a pageant, the contestants are supposed to reveal they are vital stats in a section explicitly reserved for the same. However, the contestants of Miss Peru 2017, completely went rogue and recited the crimes against women rates of their country, to raise awareness. This move had been approved by the organizers and created a wave of appreciation for the contestants who stood up for the women in their country and presented their state on such a level.

Bold is the word for these women.

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach

Pia showed the true meaning of the trending twitter tag #GirlsSupportGirls. She rooted for her compatriot to win the Miss Universe 2017 competition, like any country loving woman would do. But what really brought the essence to her support for Medina Maxine Miss Universe Phillipines 2016 was when she went on stage, for the crowning of the new Miss Universe, and took out a minute to hug Medina.

Now that is a true supporter!

Miss Texas 2017 Margana Wood

Miss Texas Margana Wood was asked about the violent neo-Nazi protests in Charlottesville, where counter-protester Heather Heyer was killed. She branded the death a "terrorist attack", and said Donald Trump should have made a statement sooner. She didn’t had a care in the world about what she felt. She was strong in her heart and showed us real inner strength as she called out the president of her country.

Miss USA contestant Mikayla Holmgren

22-year-old Holmgren made quite a splash as the first woman with Down syndrome to compete in a Miss USA pageant. She competed in Miss Minnesota USA on Sunday night, and while she didn't take home the title, she did manage to win both the Spirit of Miss USA Award and Director's Award. But award or no award, the courage and hope that she showed for other women with a disability like down syndrome, makes us say just one thing; ‘You Go Girl.’
