Miss Universe suspends Miss USA organizers amid claims the pageant was rigged

21 Oct 2022 | Priya Bhardwaj

The Miss Universe Organization, on the accusation of a rigged pageant with an already set winner, has suspended the organizers of Miss USA. According to Miss Missouri USA 2022 Mikala McGhee, Miss Brand Corp has been suspended following allegations that Miss Texas USA 2022 R’Bonney Gabriel was unfairly crowned.

The suspension has not been announced publicly yet but McGhee and the other contestants received an email from organizers. “After thorough deliberation, Miss Universe Organization has decided to suspend Miss Brand immediately. “We are appreciative of the cooperation we’ve seen from Miss USA Director Crystle Stewart as we work through this process”, read the official mail.

Earlier this month, contestants reportedly walked off stage after Gabriel’s win was announced. “I think that (Miss USA) are in a state where they are trying to revamp and re-glamorize pageantry here in the United States, because we’ve been seeing a constant drop off in enrollment for pageants, and not just in the Miss USA system,” McGhee quoted. She said the Filipino community ‘love’ the pageantry and that passion could help revitalize the dying annual tradition. McGhee also claims Gabriel’s Houston connection with Stewart helps.

Gabriel has denied all the allegations against her, saying there was no unfair advantage and she ‘would never enter any pageant or any competition that I would know I would win’. Crystle Stewart, moreover, is facing another controversy involving her husband, Max Sebrechts, who was accused of sexual misconduct by young models and pageant contestants for several years.
