Miss Universe Curacao Organization revealed Chantal Wiertz’s national costume ‘Margareth Abraham’ for Miss Universe 2020 a few hours ago on their social media, where they wrote, “Miss Curacao National Costume, Margareth Abraham, An Unforgettable Hero.” The costume is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of a tragic event in which the 24 years old flight attendant, Margareth Abraham lost her life, on May 2nd 1970. The costume is designed by Juan Carlos Padrino Rondón,owner of Padrino Couture. The organization  and Chantal also extended their thanks to the Abraham family.

Margareth Abraham was a flight attendant for the local airline ALM in Curacao. On may 2nd in 1970 ALM flight 980 departed from New York City’s JFK International Airport to Princess Juliana International Airport in Sint Maarten, Dutch Antilles. Due to bad weather conditions the plane could not land in Sint Maarten immediately and started to divert to San Juan.

However, as the weather cleared up the plane tried to land on Sint Maarten again, but after several unsuccessful landing attempts, the aircraft’s fuel was exhausted, and it made a forced water landing in the Caribbean Sea, with 23 fatalities and 40 survivors.Throughout the ditching process Margareth reacted exactly as she was trained to do and put the life of others before hers, helping passengers to get out of the aircraft. She died in the process like a true hero.

The Dutch Antillean Government formally honored Margareth Aleida Abraham by naming a plaza at the Curacao International Airport in her name. She was also recognized by President Richard Nixon, who presented her family and ALM officials with a plaque that still hangs on the wall at the Curacao International Airport.

His Majesty King Willem Alexander, of the Dutch Kingdom, posthumously awarded flight attendant Ms. Margareth Abraham the Honor Medal for Humanitarian Aid. The Medal of Honor for Charitable Relief is, after the Military William Order, the oldest surviving Dutch bravery award. The award is given to those who have committed a charitable act that bears the hallmarks of courage, policy and self-sacrifice.

Chantal can be a strong contender for the title of Miss Universe 2020 as she is experienced, determined, and focused. The diva has already started preparing herself for the finale event as she is working on her on-stage walk, body angles, postures, communication, and interview skills along with preparing her self mentally and emotionally for the competition.

Miss Universe 2020 will host the National Costume competition on 13th May 2021 with a live broadcast. Miss Universe Curacao 2020 Chantal Wiertz will represent Curacao at the 69th edition of Miss Universe on 16th May 2021 in the United States.
