On 18th February 2017, Samantha Katie was crowned as Miss Universe Malaysia 2017. The beauty queen has proven that it does not matter if you get knocked down, what matters is that you get back up. The 23 year old tried her luck for the second time at the Miss Universe Malaysia pageant, and this time she won.

Last time Samantha competed at the pageant was in the year 2013, when she was 18. She took on intense training and televised challenges and came back for MUM 2017. Winning the crown of Miss Universe Malaysia was a moment of shock for the beauty. She admitted that she was not ready then, but she was well prepared this time around. “When I fail to reach a goal, I keep trying until I achieve it,” said Samantha Katie.

Along with her title, she took home the cash prize of RM50,000 from Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation, RM2,000 cash by main sponsor senZues and sponsored prizes worth more than RM150,000. Samantha also won the special award for Miss Tsubaki Crowning Glory and was also chosen as the face of Ash Be Nimble and La Juiceria.

She wants to use her title to do good. She says, “I want to make a huge impact so that people will remember me for what I did.” She aspires of becoming an icon with her own talk show like Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey. When questioned about her height factor, Samantha said that height is just a number and that one’s personality is what stands out. She added, “I have worked with so many taller models and all my good friends are 180cm or taller, but what is important is that you let what is inside you shine through.

Samantha wants to work on her speech, practice her catwalk and work on her posture. “My preparation started way before the competition and day by day, I worked to improve myself so that I could be at my best at the final competition,” she added.

Malaysia has so far not been so successful at the Miss Universe pageant, with no titles to its credit. The best placement for Malaysia was in the year 1978, when Yasmin Yusoff managed to place Top 15 at the finals.
