The 65th edition of the Miss Universe pageant is almost coming to an end and a lot is being held at the pageant. From activities to travelling to attending events, the contestants are doing it all. Miss Universe Philippines 2016 Maxine Medina, who is already a favourite for the crown, recently made a blunder that went viral.
In a video aired on Thursday, Maxine wrongly said that the former First Lady of Philippines Imelda Marcos invented the terno. The blunder occurred at a recorded video that was aired during the live preliminary round of Miss Universe 2016. The short clip as recorded during the candidates’ visit to Vigan, where the girls modelled ternos.
Medina said in the video, "The terno was actually invented by our former first lady, Imelda Marcos. She invented these butterfly sleeves and they use it to cover their face.” "Miss Imelda Marcos popularized, just popularized the butterfly sleeves—not invent! So sorry for that," Medina later apologised for her statement.
The reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach also came up in support of Maxine and said that although it was a mistake from Medina’s end, atleast everybody learnt something from it. Pia said, “It was a mistake. It wasn’t done intentionally—she honestly didn’t know. Are we really going to put our girl down because of a statement like that? At least, now we know. If it wasn’t pointed out, it wouldn’t have been corrected.”
Keeping the mistakes aside, Medina is emerging as a strong contender for the crown. The beauty queen was initially deemed as weak and was said to be low on confidence. She, however, proved everyone wrong by giving her best performance at every event. The finale on Miss Universe 2016 is slated to be held on 30th January 2017. Who do you think will win the title this year?
