From Miss World to Mayor of Gibraltar: Miss World 2009 Kaiane Aldorino

Kaiane Aldorino Lopez made history in 2009 when she became the first woman from Gibraltar to be crowned Miss World 2009 and till date remains so. Miss World 2009 was held on 12th December 2009 in South Africa where Kaiane was also the first Gibraltarian contestant to have reached the semifinals of one of the major international pageants after receiving the title of Miss World Beach Beauty.

Being the only Miss World from her country, Kaiane went on to achieve huge things in her life after she was crowned. Prior to her win, she was working as a human resources clerk at St Bernard's Hospital for five years. With the supporters taking to the streets after her win, Kaiane received a grand homecoming by the government. She also travelled to more than forty countries as she fulfilled her reigning responsibilities.

In 2011, Aldorino was the awarded with both the Freedom of the City of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Medallion of Honour by a unanimous vote in the Gibraltar Parliament. Aldorino became the first woman to receive the Freedom of the City in Gibraltar. In 2015, Kaiane married Aron Lopez and gave birth to her beautiful daughter in 2016.

In 2014, a few years after she enjoyed her historic win, Aldorino was appointed deputy to the Mayor of Gibraltar, Adolfo Canepa, as a result of a motion by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, passed by the Parliament. Beginning her political career as she entered the government, in 2017, Kaiane became the mayor of Gibraltar. Today, she is one of the most respected politicians and loved beauty queens in the whole country.

Having conquered whatever she set her mind to, Kaiane is the true epitome of a strong character and has inspired countless women all over her country to follow in her incredible footsteps and do something big for themselves and their country.
