Jessia Islam, the first runner-up of Miss World Bangladesh is now crowned as the 2017 winner of the title, after the originally crowned winner, Jannatul Nayeem Avril was stripped off her crown. This decision was announced during a media briefing by contest’s judges and organizers at Dhaka’s Hotel Westin on 4th October 2017.

Shortly after Jannatul's crowning, rumours started flying about Jannatul. Some participatory judges came forward saying they did not vote for Jannatul, while others stated that she was not even in their Top 3, while first runner-up of the contest, Jessia was their pick for the crown. To add fuel to the controversy, the media discovered that Jannatul was married for 2 and half months before getting divorced. She was has married to a Chittagong businessman some four years ago.

That raised questions about her eligibility to compete in Miss World Bangladesh and Miss World pageants. Though as per the confirmation from Miss World organization, being a divorced woman does not disqualify her from competing in Miss World, the Miss World Bangladesh organizers were offended by Avril’s concealing the truth about her marriage, and hence decided to dethrone her.
