Philippines’ rough year at Major International Beauty Pageants in 2019

24 Dec 2019 | Priya Bhardwaj

While the year 2019 was historic for a lot of countries in the pageantry, Philippines suffered through a rough year as the country failed to win a major placement (Top 5 at least) in all the major international beauty pageants. Sure, there were moments of happiness when Leren Mae Bautista was adjudged 2nd Runner-Up at The Miss Globe or Cyrille Payumo being crowned Miss Tourism International or Gabrielle Basiano as 1st Runner-Up in Miss Friendship International or Liz Mabao’s 2nd Runner-Up in Miss Scuba International 2019 or Kayesha Chua winning Miss Asia Awards 2019 or Daena Resurreccion placing Top 5 in Miss Eco Teen. But even then, not winning a major placement in any major international beauty pageant for the first time in this decade was definitely unfortunate.

Here is the country’s placement at the major international beauty pageants –

Miss Universe 2019

Philippines has consistently placed in the Top 10 from 2010-2018, with a Top 6 entry in one, runner-up positions in four editions and the crown itself in two. This year, Gazini Christiana Ganados Miss Universe Philippines 2019 placed in the Top 20 and won the Best National Costume award even though there was so much riding on her shoulder with her predecessor being none other than Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.

Miss World 2019

Michelle Marquez Dee made it to the Top 12 semi-finalists at Miss World 2019 as she represented Philippines with pride. This placement was still better than the last two years so Michelle’s performance was still above par. Jamaica, who won the Miss World crown, definitely was a strong win for the country and expected too after Zozibini Tunzi’s win at Miss Universe. The country has just one Miss World crown under Megan Young’s delegation.

Miss International 2019

Atty. Bea Patricia Magtanong Miss International Philippines 2019 represented her country in Miss International 2019 and reached the Final 8 at the finale. Sharing her position with three other Asian beauties, there was surely a lot of chance and hope that she will atleast make it to the Top 5 but Thailand was sure a favourite for the crown who ran its track to the top and won the Mikimoto crown. Bea Patricia sure deserved more recognition than she got at the international pageant as she was strongly prepared.

Miss Earth 2019

Janelle Lazo Tee Miss Earth Philippines 2019 represented her country in Miss Earth 2019 which was held in Philippines itself. Janelle failed to make it to Top 10 this year but has had a guaranteed placement in the pageant every year with three crowns in this decade. So, it was definitely a disappointment when she did not event make it to Top 10. Philippines missed its mark in Miss Earth after so long and thus it was all the more hurtful to the pinoys.

Miss Supranational 2019

Resham Ramirez Saeed Miss Supranational Philippines 2019 represented her country at Miss Supranational 2019 and won a placement in Top 25 in the finale. Philippines won its first and only Miss Supranational title when Mutya Datul was named big winner in 2013. Except for the Top 10 finishes of Chanel Olive Thomas in 2017 and Jehza Huelar last 2018, the best placements we received were either Top 20 or Top 25.

Miss Grand International 2019

Samantha Ashley Lo Miss Grand Philippines 2019 had a rough journey even before the start of her journey. It seemed like a lost cause for Samantha Lo from the time that she departed from the Philippines, got detained at Charles de Gaulle Airport, deported back to the Philippines and then flew back abroad to reach Venezuela using a safer flight route. Samantha failed to win a place in the Top 20. The country is yet to pioneer its win in Miss Grand International.

The representatives come fully prepared to fight for the country every year at the major international beauty pageants and definitely have proven to be a strong country with stunning performances through the decade. 2019 was just a hiccup for the country and we are sure it will come banging back to the pageantry next year. The chances will definitely increase as Miss Universe Philippines will host a separate edition in 2020.
