12 Jan 2021 | Priya Bhardwaj

Puerto Rico has had a strong foothold in the pageantry, producing beauty queens who have shown tremendous capabilities of representing their country with conviction and sincerity. Specially at Miss Universe, Puerto Rico has shown dominance with five crowns under its belt.

In this decade, however, the country could not manage to get a strong foothold initially with only two Top 16 positions in 2011 and 2013 under Viviana Ortíz and Monic Pérez’s delegation. Later in the decade, the country bounced back with Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2018 Kiara Ortega placing in the Top 5 and Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2019 Madison Anderson placing as the first runner-up.

Hat-trick of top placement for Puerto Rico at Miss Universe 2020?

Kiara Liz Ortega, a Puerto Rican dancer and beauty queen, was crowned Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2018 as she represented Puerto Rico at the Miss Universe 2018 held in Bangkok, Thailand. With her absolutely stunning performance, she placed in the Top 5.

In 2019, Madison Anderson represented her country at Miss Universe 2019 which was held in USA. Being a front-runner for the crown since the beginning of the competition, it was evident she would score big. At the end of the event finale, she finished as 1st Runner-Up, becoming the country's highest non-winning placement since Cynthia Olavarría who also finished as 1st Runner-Up at Miss Universe 2005.

For the 2020 edition, Estefani´a Natalia Soto Torres has been crowned by the organization to represent the country at Miss Universe 2020. While the international pageant got postponed due to the covid-19 outbreak across the globe, it sure seems like the Puerto Rican beauty will be a strong contender for the crown this year.
