It is now a universal fact that Beauty Pageants and controversies go hand in hand. And when the pageant is Miss USA, controversies are bound to take place. The newly crowned Miss USA 2016 Deshauna Barber is facing some racist backlash after her win at Miss USA.

Barber became the first military officer to have won the Miss USA title. But the fact that Barber comes from a military background didn’t stop the racists who objected and expressed their dissatisfaction to her win because of her skin colour. The social media was jammed with hate messages and tweets about Deshauna. The Tweets and Facebook posts read –
Despite of such well deserved win by Deshauna at the Miss USA 2016 pageant, there are some who believe that some drastic measures need to be taken in future Miss USA pageants. These indecent posts only show to what extent people can stoop down as to judge someone on the basis of their colour, sex or creed. Also, the desire for a different pageant reflects the ugly racist roots upon which the consciousness of people has been developed.
Deshauna is the Logistics Commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit at Fort Meade. Deshauna Barber joined the military at the age of 17, following a family tradition. The beauty queen was all graceful and full of poise while she conducted herself at the Miss USA pageant and while attending all the questions. Yet, her colour stood out as a major factor as to why she doesn’t deserve to win the Miss USA 2016 title?

Barber’s win was nothing short of brilliance. She had the spark of a winner and her fate was sealed with her well thought and confident answer. And despite all of the racist comments, Deshauna Barber got a lot of support on social media. Those who didn’t have to explain racism to strangers celebrated Barber’s victory, and they did so with much delight.
